What is glucomannan?
Glucomannan is a highly viscous water-soluble dietary fibre obtained primarily from the root of the konjac plant, Amorphophallus konjac. It absorbs large quantities of water and forms a gel within the digestive system.
Does glucomannan help with weight loss?
Under EU authorised conditions, glucomannan in the context of an energy-restricted diet contributes to weight loss when consumed as 3 g per day divided into three 1 g doses with one to two glasses of water before meals. However, randomised clinical trials and meta-analyses show mixed results, and any average weight-loss effect appears modest.
Does glucomannan reduce appetite?
Because glucomannan absorbs water and increases viscosity within the digestive system, it may help increase feelings of fullness in some individuals. However, appetite is influenced by many factors, including meal composition, protein intake, sleep, stress and eating behaviour.
Is glucomannan good for cholesterol?
The EU authorises the claim that glucomannan contributes to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels at a daily intake of 4 g. Systematic reviews have also reported reductions in total and LDL cholesterol.
Can glucomannan help constipation?
As a water-soluble fibre, glucomannan may support bowel regularity in some people. Evidence suggests it may increase bowel movement frequency in certain populations, although the quality and consistency of evidence vary.
Does glucomannan need to be taken with water?
Yes. Adequate water is essential because glucomannan expands rapidly. Taking it without sufficient fluid can create a choking or obstruction risk.
Can I take glucomannan with medication?
Not necessarily at the same time. Because viscous fibre may influence medication absorption, anyone taking regular medication should obtain advice about appropriate spacing between glucomannan and their medicines.
Can glucomannan cause bloating?
Yes. Some people experience gas, bloating, abdominal discomfort, diarrhoea or constipation, particularly when intake is increased rapidly.
Is glucomannan a fat burner?
No. Glucomannan does not "burn" body fat. Its potential role in weight management is related primarily to its fibre properties, including viscosity and possible effects on satiety.
Can glucomannan replace a healthy diet?
No. Glucomannan is a fibre supplement and cannot provide the full nutritional range obtained from vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, nuts, seeds and other whole foods.
